One body - The body of Christ

“Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit – just as you were called to one hope when you were called – one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.”   Ephesians 4. 3–6

We are living in a world that is fast changing and is very different to just a few years ago. Although some may find that uncomfortable and long for the ‘good old days’ I think that today we face challenging, but exciting times. The same is very true within the church scene. Within our town of Tunbridge Wells there are many churches of different traditions, size and styles of worship, but more and more today we are recognizing the strength of our differences and are willing to come together to discuss, work and worship together. We are learning to value each other for what we can each bring to the whole body of Christ.

Today there is more effort being made among the churches to work towards the unity of the Spirit of which Paul reminded the Ephesian Christians, when disunity was causing many problems within the early church. I thank God for that, and pray that the Spirit may continue enabling the Church of Tunbridge Wells to move closer together. The Churches Together in England website sums up our current thinking very succinctly when it says...

Unity is not singing in unison and losing our distinctiveness:
Unity is singing in harmony, each person and tradition enriching the others.
